Read an interview with Huston Smith
Huston Smith, a former philosophy and religion professor at four major universities, has written 14 books over his 45 year career. His book The World’s Religions has sold over 2.5 million copies and is the standard introductory text for dozens of world religion classes in universities across the US. Raised by Methodist minister parents in China, he came to a deep knowledge and appreciation of the various religious wisdom traditions, often by studying them firsthand with spiritual masters. A believer that the major religions are simply organized spirituality, he states that they were revealed by the same god over different points in time in ways that were relevant to and that shaped contemporary culture. In his book The Forgotten Truth, he forwards the notion that the contemporary mind is "science-ridden," following the scientific principles of what we can see in the physical world too far, often forsaking the truths of the spiritual world that we cannot see.
